National drink: Akevitt

   Literal translation: Water of life. 

   Type: Spirit, like vodka.

   Etymology: Akevitt derives from Latin, aqua vitae.

   Ingredients: Potato, caraway, fruit oil, dill, cardamom and other spices.

   Consumption culture: Shot in tulip-shaped glasses or shot glasses.

 

Famous drinks: Finlandia Vodka, Ström Vodka, Mjød, Gløgg

Oddly enough, the national drink is not Finlandia Vodka.

 

 

Norwegian wine: Gløgg

    Literal translation: Honey wine. 

   Type: Mulled wine.

   Etymology: Mjød derives from Old Norse of Viking times, aqua vitae.

   Ingredients: Red wine, sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, bitter orange.

   Consumption culture: Consumed along with rice pudding (Norwegian: riskrem). 

 

 

Norwegian mead: Mjød

    Literal translation: Honey wine. 

   Type: Mead.

   Etymology: Mjød derives from Old Norse of Viking times, aqua vitae.

   Ingredients: Honey, fruits, spices, grains and hops.

   Consumption culture: In winter, consumed hot alongside ginger biscuits.
