National drink: Ouzo

   Literal translation: Grape liquor, water of life.

   Type: Spirit, aperitif.

   Etymology: Ouzo derives from üzüm 'grape' in Turkish.

   Ingredients: Anise and grape.

   Consumption culture: After mixing ouzo with water, you may add ice. Consumed in tall and fine ouzo glasses.

 

 

Secondary national drink: Tsipouro Τσίπουρο

    Literal translation: Tsipouro pomace brandy

   Type: Brandy, grappa, spirit.

   Etymology: Tsipuro also means gilt-head sea bream, tsipuro for the drink derives from the name of the fish.

   Ingredients: Red wine, sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, bitter orange.

   Consumption culture: Consumed along with rice pudding (Norwegian: riskrem). 

 

 

Tertiary national drink: Ρακόμελο

    Literal translation: Honey raki 

   Type: Digestive spirit

   Etymology: Rakomelo derives from ρακή + meli μέλι

   Ingredients: Raki or tsipuro with honey, several spices, traces of cinnamon, cardamom and other regional herbs

   Consumption culture: Consumed in small liquor glassIn winter, served at room temperature. In winter, consumed as a warm drink, also used to treat a sore throat or a cough.

Φραπέ, Iced coffee

Πορτοκαλάδα, Orangeade 

Λεμονάδα, Lemonade

Βυσσινάδα, Cherryade
Φασκόμηλο, Sage tea
